Why Problem Solving is More About Asking The Right Questions

Problem solving can be more about asking the right questions than finding the answers. Different questions provoke different solutions. How about using a bit of hindsight to start thinking about how useful these can be. The famous magician and escape artist Harry Houdini made a name for himself by escaping
from jail cells wherever he went. What made him so newsworthy was the fact that he escaped from the cells after having been stripped and searched. Early in his career he noticed that the doctors that examined him wore long black frock coats so he hatched an ingenious plan. He had a small cloth bag made of the same material to hide his picks and keys in. The bag had small hooks attached to it and was easily fastened to the rear of the doctors coat as Houdini greeted him. Houdini could be thoroughly search with no fear of his tools being discovered. Houdini retrieved the bag by giving the doctor a friendly clap on the back after his examination. This ingenious solution could well be the result of asking a different question. Rather than asking, 'Where am I going to hide the keys' Houdini probably thought, 'Where is the last place the doctor is going to think of looking for them' We don't actually know what Houdini thought, but that's not the point. Here is a story that can get us thinking about the kinds of questions we are asking in a new way. What questions are you asking your self How could you ask a better question In The Houdini Principle we explore the escapes and exploits of Harry Houdini in a unique way that provides insights into principles that help us generate great questions.
